Sr. Scientsit, LARPM, CIPET, Bhubaneswar, Odisa-751024 Description: Epoxy resins are one of the thermosetting polymers that often exhibit high tensile strength and modulus, excellent chemical and corrosion resistance and good dimensional stability. Hence they are widely used in structural adhesives, surface coatings, engineering composites, and electrical laminates. The major drawback of cured epoxy resins are extremely brittle in nature due the presence of rigid 3-dimensional network formed on their backbone. As resulted they have limited utility in applications requiring high impact and fracture strengths. During my research, I have focused to improve the toughening properties of the epoxy monomers by modifying with several polymers and fillers. My research broadly divided into three steps: In the first step, the experimental details with characterization techniques of surface modified and unmodified sisal fibers were reported. In the second step, the unsaturated polyester (UP) toughened epoxy has been reported. The effect of various properties of nanoclays and sisal fibers on the UP toughened epoxy system has also been studied. In the third step, the synthesis of bio-based epoxy resins from the castor oil i.e. epoxidized castor oil (ECO) and acrylated epoxidized castor oil (AECO) has been reported. The primary focus of this step has to replace the DGEBA epoxy with the bio-based AECO based epoxy system. Secondary focus has to study the synergistic effect of both nanoclay and sisal fiber on the AECO toughened DGEBA blends.
