Annexure 1 (Rsesarch Projects)
Ph. D. Work
Poly-carbonate (PC) is an engineering plastic of good commercial importance. It has found use in products ranging from automobiles, computer housing, cell phones, jetliners, astronaut helmets and bullet resistant window glazing. The current digital age has given rise to the use of PC in making CD's, DVD's and other digital equipment's. The annual production of Poly-carbonate is around 450 million TPA.
The PhD work comprised of chemical recycling of poly-carbonate to give value added products. Bis-phenol A poly-carbonate was chemically degraded and converted to bis-phenol A and dihydroxyethoxy bis-phenol A (DHEBA) which were used for preparation of epoxy and polyester respectively.
Epoxy and polyesters are widely used in coating and polymer industry due to their versatile properties. A constant process for development of newer monomers for polyester with improved properties is on. As part of PhD work, study was conducted to prepare a long chain aromatic diol to be used in preparation of polyester. The above diol was also prepared by chemical degradation of bis-phenol A polycarbonate.
Epoxy: Optimization of poly-carbonate hydrolysis to yield bis-phenol A and use of regenerated bis-phenol-A for in-situ synthesis of epoxy. Study of the epoxy resin for floor coating, adhesive and high performance coating applications.
Polyester: Conversion of bis-phenol A obtained from the hydrolysis of poly-carbonate to prepare DHEBA a long chain diol. This was further converted to linear and branched polyesters using different acid moieties viz. dimethyl terephthalate, adipic acid and maleic anhydride. The polyesters were studied for their application in electrical insulation and powder coating applications.
