Project work
Investigation on polymer composite fabricated using polymer waste as a filler
Location: SJCE, Mysore under Dr. Siddaramaiah and Dr. GS Anathapadamanabha
Material used for preparation of composites in our experiment:
Unsaturated polyester resin
Methyl ethyl ketone peroxide-catalyst
Cobalt napthanate accelerator
PVA –releasing agent
Ground PVC-filler
Processing
Mold casting –technique used in this project involves the usage of simple compression mold of dimension mold of dimension 18.7*18.7 cms. Resin is well mixed with materials discussed earlier and poured into the mold. PVA should be applied on the surface of the mold, which acts as a releasing agent.
Recipe of composite processing is as follows:
Unsaturated polyester resin
MEKP & cobalt napthanate (2%/100%resin)
Ground PVC pipe (5,10,15,20%)
Polyvinyl alcohol as releasing agent
Catalyst & accelerator are required for the faster curing to take place in case of unsaturated polyester resin. The diluents used during the manufacturing of unsaturated polyester resin are styrene, which acts as cross-linking agent in case of curing process.
The catalyst are used keeping the process and process temperature In consideration we have utilized MEKP and cobalt naptathanate as curing system for unsaturated polyester resin to get 3mm thickness sheet. The above resin used to cast them into sheets. After casting, the sheets were kept for 24 hrs in curing and later they were subjected to post curing conditions. We adopted or equal to 100 Degree Celsius post curing is done in oven for 3 hrs.
we then tested the following:
Tensile strength and modulus
Impact strength
Hardness
Conclusion
Drastic improvement in impact strength with increase in PVC waste filler content in usp matrix.
Significant improvement in elongation property was also noticed with increase in PVC filler may be due to incorporation of soft PVC components in USP thermoset
Retains dimensional stability with increase in PVC filler content
Reduction tensile strength as expected because poor interaction between USP and PVC filler
The advantages of these composites are cost reduction improvement in impact strength and retain in the dimensional stability
Aspiring to hold a technically challenging and responsible position in the polymer industry
