Research Project
My M.E. Polymer Technology dissertation is focused on Pyrolysis of Plastics. The polymers
undertaken for this study are LDPE and PP. I got an opportunity to design, fabricate and commission
the set-up for this project. This is an attempt to convert plastic waste into useful products. Presently
the plastic is converted into liquid fuel. This is being done to know the composition and the
properties. This information can give us an idea whether the gases can be cracked and converted into
useful products. The prototype designed can process about 100 g of plastic. For PP the yield obtained
is about 85 g of liquid fuel. The experiments are being done in the presence and absence of catalysts.
The effect of temperature on the pyrolysis is also being investigated.
Experimental Skills
Conversant with Dilute Solution Viscometry for molecular weight determination of polymers.
Designed and successfully commissioned a set-up for the Pyrolysis of Plastics to liquid fuel.
Familiar with ASTM distillation for analyzing liquid fuel obtained from Plastics Pyrolysis.
Familiar with MFI determination for different polymers.
Familiar with UTM for testing polymers.
Familiar with Gas Chromatography for liquid and gas analysis.
