Abstract: Conducting polymer composites find applications in various products such as EMI
shielding devices, electronics, batteries and fuel cells. In this paper we explore the conductivity of
carbon filled thermoplastic composites as a function of filler loading and type. Polypropylene (PP)
was melt compounded with combinations of carbon based fillers, in increasing weight percentages,
and other additives to produce conducting thermoplastic composites. The composite were
characterized using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Thermo gravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA). Additionally, compression moulded discs were used to perform
through-plane electrical resistivity measurements. The addition of increasing amounts of fillers
showed significant decrease in the electrical resistivity while minimally affecting the mechanical
properties of the composites.
