Title of Project: Tuning of biopolymers using ionic liquid media
Abstract of Postdoctoral Research:
Ionic liquids are now a major topic of academic and industrial interest with numerous existing
and potential applications. While postdoctoral research did synthesis of Imidazolium chlorides
with one or two carboxylic acid substituent groups, 1-methyl-3-alkylcarboxylic acid imidazolium
chloride. Also synthesized styrene sulfonated based imidazolium salts. 1-Butyl-3- methylimidazolum chloride, 1-Hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride and 1, 3-didecyl-2- metyl imidazilium chloride are used to prepare styrene sulfonated based imidazolium salts. With and without solvent ring opening polymerization (ROP) of L-lactide carried out in the
presence of different imidazole based ionic liquid.
Ring opening polymerization of L-Lactide did in the presence of ionic liquid and different bases
to increase possibility of carbine formation.
Although the IL affected the final product’s molecular weight, independent of the IL structure, GPC confirmed the formation of mainly LA oligomers, which took place under stereocenter racemization.
Interestingly, some reactions provided also higher molecular weight PLA. The origin of these
organometallic complex and solvent free LA oligo/polymerizations is related to the in situ carbene formation. This was confirmed when using a C2-C4-C5 trimethyl substituted imidazolium IL, preventing the possible carbene formation and, as such, the conversion of LA. Commercial PURAC PLA material modified using 1-Hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, 1-Hexadecyl-3-methylimidazoliun methanesulfonate and 1-Hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium bis (trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide and found exciting result about nanofiber at room temperature. Use of ionic liquid in prepration of PLA composite showed change in thermal stability of PLA.
