Title:“Utilization of Industrial Waste”

The study involved utilization of recycled PET soft drink bottles, PET oligomers generated during the manufacturing of Poly (ethylene terephthalate). This work was an effort to put these recycled PET soft drink bottles, PET oligomers in a value added product for various useful applications as mentioned below,
Characterization of PET Oligomers:
The PET oligomers in the form of lump and was used directly without any pretreatment and characterized for its physical, chemical properties.
Based on chemical analysis, composition of PET oligomers was found and was used for further study.
Glycolysis of PET Oligomers:
A method was standardized for glycolysis of PET oligomers. Four different glycols were used to study the comparative effect of these glycols on the glycolysis.
These glycols are Ethylene glycol, 1, 4 Butanediol, Neopentyl glycol and Hexylene glycol.
Designing of Polyesters:
A family of co-polyesters was synthesized using different glycols and dibasic acids, with an emphasis on their suitability in other value added applications for paint and coating industries.
Twenty different co-polyesters were prepared having varying geometrical structures, which were investigated for the effect of such geometrical changes on their properties.
Study in Thermosetting Powder Coating:
Present investigation, low cost, better performance properties, eco-friendly, thermosetting powder coating were prepared.
Carboxyl functional polyester resins for powder coating were synthesized having terephthalic acid-ethylene glycol unit component fixed from PET oligomers.
Using eight different routes, a total of twenty-four polyesters based on Trimellitic anhydride (TMA) and without TMA were synthesized and characterized for their chemical and physical properties.
These polyesters were formulated with Epoxy resin (GT 7004) for Hybrid and Triglycidyl isocyanurate (PT 810) for Polyester Powder Coating.
In another study, effect of catalyst on curing, surface flow, gloss and mechanical properties of coated film was studied.
Study in Wire Enamel Application:
A commercially available wire enamel polyester resin in the market is based on Dimethyl terephthalate, Monoethylene glycol and Glycerol.
Keeping the current power scenario and economic conditions in mind, the main objective of this work is to develop a polyester resin modified by replacing with varying proportions of PET oligomers.
The polyester resins were synthesized and characterized for their physical, chemical and electrical properties.
Thermoplastic type Road Marking Paint:
A new thermoplastic type road marking paint has emerged in the past few years.
Aim of the work was to synthesize polyester resin based on PET oligomers useful in thermoplastic type road marking paint as a binder.
Polyester was synthesized based on PET oligomers; different paint formulations were prepared and evaluated for their performance at different temperatures.
Pilot plant scale up:
In collaboration with the sponsors, manufacturing of resins was done in a pilot plant.
Commercial production for powder coating application has already started.
The parameters were optimized in the laboratory set up, and were further used for optimization and standardization of process parameters for a pilot plant.
The plant capacity was 500 kg in which a 300 kg batch was successfully conducted for the desired products.
