Project Details:
Title: A Project Report “Determination Of Stress Intensity Factor Using Plastic Zone Concept”
Project Overview:
A general method for the determination of crack front plastic zone is presented. The crack model utilized is of the DUGDALES type i.e., the plastic zone is assumed to spread in front of the crack, in the plane of the crack. The width of the annulus of plastic deformation for a layer of very thin plastic zone is calculated as well as the Stress Intensity Factor is determined.
The method relies on the finite element analysis. Using this analysis the elastic and plastic regions of the crack are discretized into small elements and the stress arising over the crack due to a constant or linear surface displacement in each element is obtained.
For a center straight crack with symmetric loading conditions Ansys software package is used for finding out the stress intensity factor and for the inclined crack model the concept of plastic zone size is used to determine the Stress Intensity Factor.
